The excise and taxation department has prepared a draft to amend the law relating to property tax that would empower the department to freeze the bank accounts of defaulters besides his arrest. The departmental sources said the department collects billions of rupees property tax annually but defaulters avoid the tax because of the leniency in the laws. It eventually affects the revenue collection targets, they added. The citizens do not pay taxes despite repeated notices and the department ends up on recovery shortage. The sources said a summary has been dispatched to the secretary excise for his approval.
